As human activity expands, so does the reach of our waste, and this has led to a fascinating yet concerning development: white storks, majestic birds known for their long-distance migrations, are turning to landfills for sustenance. This behavior, while seemingly beneficial for the birds, may come with a hidden cost to their long-term health and fitness.
A Global Trend
The rise of waste production worldwide has inadvertently created a new foraging ground for wildlife. Mr. Anustup Bandyopadhyay, a PhD student at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, notes, "The globally increasing trend of waste production is creating new foraging opportunities for wildlife. However, the effects of feeding on this waste are still debated and remain somewhat equivocal."
This trend is particularly evident in Eastern Europe, where white storks have only recently started foraging on landfills. In Poland, for instance, some individuals have begun relying on landfills, while others still depend on natural prey. This provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of different foraging strategies on the birds' growth, energy balance, and physiological condition.
The Allure of Landfills
Landfills offer a reliable and energetically cheap food source, available all year round. As Mr. Bandyopadhyay explains, "They can spend less time foraging and potentially channel that time and energy into other activities such as breeding."
This is especially true during the breeding season when the food demands of nestlings are at their peak. However, the low nutritional quality and potential exposure to contaminants from landfill foraging may have unintended consequences for the storks' physiology and behavior.
The Hidden Cost
To understand the impact of landfill foraging, Mr. Bandyopadhyay and his collaborators use a range of techniques, including enzyme immunoassays for hormones, colorimetric assays for oxidative stress, and high-resolution respirometry to study mitochondrial metabolism. Their preliminary results reveal that landfill-foraging storks tend to have greater body mass and higher energy stores than those feeding on natural prey.
However, a surprising finding is the evidence of DNA damage associated with landfill diets, which appears much sooner than expected. "We expected to see DNA damage linked to diet at the end of their nestling stage, but instead, we observe that these differences appear at a very early age, when the birds are only about a week old," says Mr. Bandyopadhyay.
The Broader Impact
The reliability of food offered by landfills may also influence the storks' migratory behaviors. As seen in other populations, the Iberian Peninsula white storks have shifted from being wholly migratory to partially migratory, or even sedentary, largely due to favorable weather conditions and the availability of landfill food subsidies.

While landfills provide a reliable food source, they may also expose birds to contaminants and low nutritional quality.
