The NHS is set to revolutionize prostate cancer treatment with the introduction of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), a groundbreaking approach that promises to transform the lives of thousands of men. A New Era of Prostate Cancer Treatment
The PACE-B trial, a landmark study led by The Institute of Cancer Research, London, and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, has revealed that SBRT can effectively treat small, low-risk prostate cancers in just five hospital visits, significantly reducing treatment time compared to the traditional 20 sessions of standard external radiotherapy. This breakthrough is set to be offered to eligible men across England's 48 radiotherapy centers within the next three months.

NHS England has approved SBRT for men with early-stage prostate cancer that hasn't spread beyond the prostate and has a low or medium risk of growing or spreading. This treatment is particularly suitable for those with small, well-defined cancers. The modeling suggests that approximately 3,500 men annually will opt for SBRT over standard radiotherapy, significantly reducing the strain on both patients and the healthcare system.

Both treatments proved equally effective in keeping cancer under control, with 96% of SBRT patients and 95% of conventional radiation patients showing no recurrence or worsening five years after treatment. Side effects were also low, with 5.5% of SBRT patients experiencing grade 2 or higher side effects, compared to 3.2% in the conventional group.
